• Seismology

Seismic monitoring and data analysis can be used as design and risk monitoring tools in any geotechnical area, where seismicity is a hazard or where damage by seismic waves is eminent, not limited to blast induced waves. Aeon Engineering is accredited by Mine Safety Department (MSD) to provide blast induced ground vibration and air overpressure monitoring to the mining, quarrying and construction industries. Blast induced ground motion measured in terms of Peak Particle Velocity (mm s−1) and air blast overpressure (dB) have detrimental effects to the environment if not monitored and controlled.

Beyond permissible limits, vibrations can most definitely result in the rupture or falling of masonry in the site, damage to structures surrounding the blasting area (if the project is in the vicinity of a public place), environmental impacts, flyrock and in some cases, cause fear and worry in the people, on and around the site. As AEON Engineering Limited, we have developed a Blast Induced Air Overpressure and Vibration Management and Monitoring Plan (BIAOPVMMP) which makes up an Appendix of the Environmental/Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for all Mining Operations surface and underground alike. The BIAOPVMMP has been developed following a full assessment of noise and blasting vibration complaints from communities surrounding environments where blasting is conducted.

With a site-specific equation and extensive third-party evidence, AEON Engineering Limited rightly protects every client from unnecessary claims by ensuring all resulting vibrations fall under prescribed limits.

AEON’s array of seismological services covers the complete spectrum from data processing and analysis, routine monitoring of equipment to the full time on-site maintenance of the seismic system. Our unique capacity to provide consultants, skilled in both rock engineering and seismology, enable us to actively participate in the formulation of pro-active strategies to combat the risk associated with seismic waves.

Project and Constraint:

When a client was clearing dolomite outcrops from a residential property, neighbouring residents almost filed a court case against the developer citing damages due to the blasts. AEON Engineering Limited was brought on-board to assess vibrations and protect the developer.

Our Approach:

Monitor ground vibrations in the nearby structures of blasting through seismographs and documented the recordings thoroughly. Recommended further mitigation measures for the attenuation of blast induced ground vibrations and air overpressure.

Final Outcome:

The recordings showed that the ground vibrations were within the prescribed limits and the client was able to carry on the work without further delay.
